HISTORY The Mount Vernon Writer's Network Inc., a nonprofit Writer's Networking Center and Creative Ideas Workshops group, was founded in March 2011 at the Mount Vernon Public Library when Nishan Stepak, Collection Librarian, asked "jAFa" aka james Fair to help establish a poetry group as part of the Library's ongoing community events. Different formats for the group (open mic, poetry slam) were explored at that first meeting. "jAFa" suggested starting a writer's network "where we would share ideas, resources, and experiences." Someone else suggested holding workshops (self-publishing vs. traditional publishing; the truths and myths of copyrighting materials; and monthly writing exercises/assignments). There was unanimous agreement that one of the group's goals should be to take presentations/readings/workshops to the community. Especially to groups who either could not come out to an event, or found it inconvenient to do so, such as nursing homes, senior centers, church community centers, social clubs, youth organizations, etc. The MVWN members also share the belief that the arts are vital to the health and growth of any community, and want to contribute to this growth in the way they are best qualified: through their writings and wordsmithing experiences. Programs and services we offer: Signature Presentation  "Why We Write": A 30 minutes ensemble presentation exploring some of the reasons we choose the written word as a medium of expression. Workshops: • Myths and facts of copyrighting. • Self-Publishing versus Traditional Publishing. • Presentation & performance skills. • Resume/bio writing for Wordsmiths. • Audio (Spoken Word) CD Production. • Others as the need requires.   Networking for Wordsmiths of all disciplines. The Mt. Vernon Writer's Network meets on the third Thursday of each month at the Mount Vernon Public Library (28 S. 1st Ave., Mt. Vernon, NY 10550), usually in the Community room.
